What is the Minor Scale on Guitar?

The minor scale is an important scale that you should learn during your musical venture on guitar. Now, if you haven’t mastered the major scale, be sure to check it out before starting on the minor scale. (Be sure to check out the major scale here.) Remember, chords are built off scales and we already went over some basic chords and how they are formed. Let’s just run over a minor scale to make sure you understand how we were getting those notes.

A scale is a group of musical notes collected in ascending and descending order, that provides material for or is used to conveniently represent part or all of a musical work including melody and/or harmony. So, basically, there are patterns that you follow to make a group of notes into scales. Once you understand how the scale is formed, you can move it to any key! Here is the note step pattern for the minor scale and here is a video I found that explains the major scale. Here is the step pattern and the video:

W 1/2 W W 1/2 W W

Also in this video, he talked about “plectrum” picking which is also, and more commonly referred to, alternate picking. This is an important technique to develop if you are focusing on building speed – and even if you are not. The most important thing when practicing is to play to a metronome and make sure your notes are nice a clean. Remember, accuracy is more important than speed!
