John Petrucci’s, of Dream Theater, Guitar Rig

John Petrucci is the guitarist for the band Dream Theater. Dream Theater has become a successful progressive metal band andwas formed in 1985 under the name Majesty by John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy while they attended Berklee College of Music in Massachusetts, before they dropped out to support the band. Though a number of lineup changes followed, the three original members remain today along with James LaBrie and Jordan Rudess.

He has a pretty sweet guitar rig. He uses Ernie Ball Music Man guitar and a series of Mesa Boogie amps including the Lonestar and the Mark IV. He uses Mesa 4×12s packed with Celestion Vintage 30s. He also uses all the usual effects including a flanger, chorus, and wah. He has a very nice rack setup and a massive programmed pedal board to make switching easy.

All and all John Petrucci has a very nice set up that any guitarist would envy! But enough with all the writing, let’s watch the videos.

Definitely an impressive setup. I hope you got all the information that you needed and you are well on your way to sounding more and more like Petrucci. If you need to purchase some gear, check out these awesome sites:

Also, if you haven’t already, be sure that you check out some of Dream Theater’s music. I am sure that you will love what you hear!

Kirk Hammett’s Guitar Rig

Kirk Hammett is the guitar player for one of the biggest bands ever, Metallica. Metallica s an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1981. Founded when drummer Lars Ulrich posted an advertisement in a local newspaper, Metallica’s line-up has primarily consisted of Ulrich, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, while going through a number of bassists. Currently, the spot is held by Robert Trujillo.

Kirk Hammett is known for his use of the wah pedal, his melodic and fast solos, and his overall guitar skills. In this video, you will get a tour of Kirk’s pedal board as well as some information on the guitars he uses. Also, note that he has a extensive rack full of various gear that he plays through. Here is what one of the greatest guitar player’s ever uses to be, well, one of the greatest guitar players ever.

Thanks to Guitar Player Magazine for making this video and bringing the information to the world!

Theory of a Deadman’s Guitar Rig

Ever wonder how Theory of a Deadman gets their amazing guitar tones live? Well, Tyler Connolly is the vocalist/guitarist for Theory of a Deadman and I have found an exclusive interview with Tyler talking about his guitar rig. It is actually pretty straight forward – Gibson Guitars and Mesa Amps. He has a few pedals, but nothing fancy. He has a few boutique pedals such as a DSL Chorus/Vibe and a DSL Delay – which are great pedals.

Anyway, let’s check out the video. Tyler is even kind enough to show you some licks.

If you would like to pick up Theory of a Deadman’s latest album, be sure to do so here at Amazon.

Eric Johnson’s Rig

Eric Johnson is among the elite of the elite when it comes to guitar playing. He is also one of my top favorites. He uses a nice, some what simple set-up. A Couple of amps, a few effects, and some A/B boxes. As if his skill and creative thinking was not enough alone, he has a warm, creamy tone. The video I am post is from Harmony Central – who has tons and tons of great stuff. For lack of time that I have to post, here is a short overview of effects (not all, he has some fuzz and a compressor and more, but it is all in the video) that was posted as a comment by a Youtube user.

At 0:42 he turned on the TC Electronic Stereo Chorus Flanger, which is either in Chorus or Pitch Shift mode and sends its stereo output to two Fender blackface Twin Reverb amplifiers. At 0:53 he stomped on a true bypass effects loop, and in the loop there is an Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man. At 1:12 he turned on a (probably vintage) MXR Dyna Comp.

And here is how the magic is made:

Impressive. Anybody’s rig you want to see in particular? Be sure to subscribe to my feed to get the updates every week!

Slash’s Guitar Rig

Do you want to know what Slash uses in his guitar rig and how he gets his tone? Well, luckily, Slash has openly talked about his amp set up and his guitars for years. (The true secret is Slash himself.) As it should be pretty obvious, Slash has a love Gibson guitars. Although he has changed gear over the years, some things have remained constant – Gibson guitars (sometimes B.C. Rich Mockingbirds) and Marshall amps. Slash with his amps

Here is a quote from a more recent interview with Slash about his live set up:

“I have different tunings or whatever, so there are different guitars needed for different songs. I usually have about eight to 10 main guitars and then a backup for every one of those. Altogether, there are anywhere from 16 to 20 guitars on tour with me. I have a Slash Marshall JCM and a Vintage Modern head, which are wired together, and I use that for a dirty sound. Then I have a couple of other Slash Marshall heads that I use for a clean sound, in case I’m playing something like a quiet intro or section. I have four Marshall cabinets. Aside from that, I use a wireless rig, a couple of wah-wah pedals, an octaver and a delay pedal. It is a really simple setup.”

Slash suggest these settings for his dirty amp:

Presence 7
Bass 7
Mid 4.5
Treble 7
Gain 6.5
Output Master 6
Lead Master 10

That should give you his tone specifically for early GNR. There is tons more of information on Slash’s rig. He has changed out pedals over the years, but he doesn’t use many – mostly a Dunlop Crybaby Wah. I know that he doesn’t mess with effects on stage, but his guitar tech does it for him off stage. I will give you two sites you can check out for more on Slash’s rig! Enjoy.

Joe Satriani’s Guitar Rig

Joe Satriani a great guitarist and excellent teacher and even better – he has an amazing guitar rig. I found a couple of videos explaining his set up. I know he likes to use a lot of pedals and does it the old fashion way (no multi-selector pedals). Check out Joe’s guitar rig and how he gets his awesome tones with his super group ‘Chickenfoot.’

Be sure to check out more of Joe Statriani’s music and Chickenfoot! What do you think of Joe Satriani’s guitar rig?
